Elon Musk is redefining the future of artificial intelligence, and it looks like Tesla is the horse he is betting on to cross the finish line first. In a recent statement on X, Musk made a bold prediction about the race toward Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
"Tesla will be one of the companies to make AGI and probably the first to make it in humanoid/atom-shaping form," Musk claimed. This shift in rhetoric suggests that while xAI — Musk’s artificial intelligence startup, which was recently acquired by SpaceX — may focus on populating space with a massive network of over a million AI satellites, Tesla is where the "real-world" intelligence is being built.

Tesla’s AI Foundations: FSD and Custom Silicon
Tesla has spent years building the infrastructure for AGI through its Full Self-Driving (Supervised) program. Unlike other AI companies that focus on large language models, Tesla’s AI is designed to navigate and interact with the physical world. This requires massive amounts of video data and specialized, highly scalable AI chips that Tesla designs in-house.
By teaching cars to "see" and make decisions in complex traffic, Tesla is essentially creating a digital brain that can understand the laws of physics. This "real-world AI" is the foundational block for AGI, as it moves beyond just processing text to actually shaping the world around it.
The Rise of Optimus: From Factory to Home
The most exciting application of this intelligence is Optimus, Tesla’s humanoid robot. Tesla is moving incredibly fast here, recently discontinuing the Model S and Model X to clear space at its Fremont factory for Optimus Gen 3 production lines.
The company has several massive milestones planned for the robot:
Q1 2026: The official unveiling of the Optimus Gen 3 production-intent prototype.
Mid 2026: Launch of low-volume production for internal use within Tesla factories.
Late 2026: The start of high-volume production lines, with a long-term goal of hitting 1 million units annually.
Eventually, Tesla hopes to hit a $20,000 price target for the robot at scale, making it accessible for both industrial and domestic use. While Tesla plans to produce Optimus Gen 3 in Fremont, the even more advanced Gen 4 design is slated to be built at Gigafactory Texas.
A Tesla-SpaceX Merger?
With xAI now under the SpaceX umbrella to build data centers in space, and Tesla handling the AGI and robotics, some experts believe a merger between the two companies is becoming increasingly likely. Combining SpaceX’s orbital AI compute with Tesla’s humanoid "atom-shaping" form would create a tech conglomerate unlike anything the world has ever seen.
