I’m really excited to see what FSD looks like at the end of this year vs the beginning. I feel like we can clearly see it now vs a couple years ago.

So HW3 with purchased FSD will get a free Upgrade, great News! I hope this also applies to European Vehicles, first of course we have to get FSD generally. But if this also comes with also a free Upgrade on the FSD Hardware, there is nothing more we could wish for

I bet there was a calculation they did where they weighed the amount of resources (money & time) it takes to keep HW3 going vs just replacing the HW3 in cars that have FSD.
The real question in my mind is - when will this happen for HW3 vehicles? This is great news but don't hold your breath just yet!

• They say that HW3 cars will be upgraded as long as they purchased FSD "outright". I purchased my 2020 MX used from Tesla with FSD. Does that mean my car will be upgraded?
• "People go to manual driving to check their phone so that they don’t strike out/get beeped at - and then go back to FSD" - this highlights the idea of unintended consequences. I wonder if this will drive Tesla to rethink their eye tracking monitoring procedures.

I can not see any way Tesla could NOT upgrade your X. Thing is, FSD will have to be proven unsupervised on AI4 (or whatever it gets to that point) before Tesla will update your car. Right? I mean, why go through the work of getting the X to AI4 if it's possible AI4 isn't bulletproof unsupervised. They'd have to go back and add on something else if that wasn't enough. So I'm guessing you'll have HW3 for a while. Might be less than another year, might be more. That said- it seems to me that Tesla has a real incentive to offer HW3 with FSD owners a free transfer to a new Tesla. It's gotta be expensive to get the HW3 cars to AI4+, more $ than the FSD suite in a new car.
As far as checking your phone- YES! My jaw dropped when I read that. We are truly our own worst enemy.

As long as FSD isnt here anyways i dont mind keeping HW3 for another year or two, as it doesnt make a difference for EAP/Autopilot.

You could be right with that, makes sense to first prove that unsupervised fsd is possible for AI4. The remaining question is if upgraded HW3 vehicles will ever be capable of this because of the lower resolution cameras which they are not planning to replace with the upgrade. This has to make a difference, right? Cant just use worse resolution cameras for the same result.

You did buy it. The cars with FSD included are priced higher.

My question is can I pay for the upgrade, if so, how much?
