They are going to upgrade HW3 computers for people who have purchased FSD?!? If true, this is HUGE news!

I also like that they are working on their service system. Our cars can already do most of the diagnoses and automating the whole thing just makes sense. I guess there will be a time in the future that your car alerts you to a problem and schedules the service, you just pick the most convenient time. And when/if unsupervised FSD becomes a thing the car could just drive itself to the service center and back. Neat!

It's big news about the possibility of getting an upgrade to HW4 computer (IF you purchased FSD).

That said, I find myself to be confused:

Tesla Confirms Hardware 3 is Robotaxi Ready - October 16
https://www.notateslaapp.com/news/2320/tesla-confirms-hardware-3-is-robotaxi-ready

"Lars Moravy, the Vice President of Vehicle Engineering at Tesla, spoke to attendees at We, Robot, and mentioned that Hardware 3 will be Robotaxi capable (at the 7:25 mark). That means that it will be capable of Unsupervised FSD, according to Tesla."

Everything Tesla Announced During Its Earnings Call - Oct 24

  • “Vast Majority” of Tesla’s vehicles on the road today will be capable of autonomy
  • Tesla will continue to iterate FSD on HW4 first, and then backport to HW3
  • HW3 does not “fundamentally support” kernel features, and Tesla has to use tricks and additional work to get it to function
  • Elon admits he is not 100% sure HW3 will be capable of autonomy
  • If HW3 cannot do the job, Tesla will upgrade HW3 computers for owners who have purchased FSD.
    • Tesla has previously said multiple times this was not possible, this is big news
    • Upgrade will only cover the inference computers, not cameras or other parts
Doesn't "autonomy" mean "Unsupervised FSD"?

Did Tesla run into a big problem with FSD and HW3 between the 16th and the 24th?

Watch Moravy's body language, it's really not convincing. He said she's "good to go" but his head is shaking "no".

Another thing I don't quite understand. Tesla confirmed that they are making money (and quite a lot of it) but they keep pushing deals on cars; FSD transfer, Cybertruck referrals, etc. Are they making all of their money in Energy and not really doing much in Cars anymore? Will they get out of the car business at some point in the future?

Like I've said before, I think the technology in the Cybertruck is great. I think the Cybertruck itself is terrible, at least as far as I've seen in YouTube reviews. 🤷‍♂️

They really should have focused on the "Model 2/Q" instead of the cybertruck first. First, theres a really small market for Pickup trucks outside the U.S. and secondly, its hard to beat conventional pickup trucks on harsh terretory with an electric vehicle. The Model 2/Q would be making money faster i guess (my girlfriend definetly would want one if its available), but only Tesla knows the exact numbers. She's still hoping for a release next year :D
