It’s clear that HW3 is not powerful enough to run these latest FSD models, but HW3 owners are right to feel left out and disappointed with Tesla selling vehicles with HW3 up through the middle of 2023.

Actually, I believe that there were new Model 3 vehicles with HW3 being sold as recently as the end of 2023, if not the beginning of 2024.

I'll admit, when I bought mine (2022 M3 LR) in Nov 2021, I gave no thought to hardware, though I wish I had. If I had considered my car becoming obsolete in two years (like a phone), I'm not sure I'd have purchased it. Now that it's 3 years on, I feel like I'm driving a relic. But I'm not about to get caught up in the 2 yr cycle of trade-ups I notice many doing. Whenever I do decide to get rid of this car, I'm going ICE again or considering other makers that aren't being run by a nut job.

Edit to add: I've considered EM to be a nut job before the political stuff. Dude over-promises, under-delivers at Tesla, Boring, X, ... SpaceX seems to be progressing, though the Mars thing is absurd.

When I took delivery of my HW3 vehicle in April 2023, I knew HW4 was coming (and it did just weeks later). BUT, I bought the vehicle to drive - not to drive me. I also knew FSD was (and still is) somewhere between an alpha and beta product that I don't expect to become a finished product during the period of time I expect to own the vehicle.

Over the 18 months and 30K miles I've owned the vehicle, it continues to get better and gain new features through regular software updates.

IF Tesla "solves" unsupervised full self-driving while I still own this vehicle, I'll either:

  • Admire from a distance and continue to drive manually or with supervision
  • Trade for a newer model that supports unsupervised full self-driving
  • Take advantage of the promised hardware upgrade (assuming it will be required, which it most likely will)

I would not cut off my nose to spite my face - even without unsupervised full self-driving, there are plenty of other reasons I would not want any type or brand of vehicle other than a Tesla and I certainly have no intentions of ever purchasing another gas or diesel vehicle. Good god - I can't even stand the thought after having owned an EV.
