I'm truly ignorant when it comes to leasing a car and the buy outs. Does anyone know why Tesla didn't offer the purchase option before?

It started with the Model 3 and just continued with the Y. The reason being was that they wanted to retain the cars for a robo-taxi program. IMO, I think they genuinely just wanted to boost sales for FSD by saying this. I really don’t think they even thought they were close to a robotaxi program.
