Interesting stuff, particularly that the regen is a 'wash' when using reduced because it happens when the driver hits the pedal as well.

That's interesting stuff to read indeed.

However:
  • Regen braking is not only good for range, most important it actually helps with safety since the car instantly decelerates while the driver moves their foot from accelerator to the brake pedal, gaining precious time and essentially reducing the braking distance (think about motor racing, both feet are constantly on each pedal to eliminate the lag between braking and accelerating action).
  • While I get that some hardware modifications should be required for former models to apply regen instead of soft braking action, that would be only to the benefit of low-regen settings, which hopefully should be a niche use case (both due to FSD and the benefits of one-pedal driving once getting used to it).
  • For clarity, nothing prevents Tesla from applying regen braking simultaneously with normal braking, which I think is already the case.
